The Gond folk art traces its origin from Madhya Pradesh, India particularly practiced by the Gond tribal community of central India. Gond being one of the largest tribal communities in India can also be found in pockets of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chattisgarh. The classic themes of these prolific paintings were predominantly Digna and Bhittichitra which have now evolved in the present day. Their art serves to be a medium of expression encompassing their daily life’s quest inspired by local legends and myths. The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture thereby centering story-telling as a prime element of every painting. Digna usually involves the painting of traditional geometric patterns on the walls of the houses whereas Bhattachitra incorporated more natural elements depicting animals, trees and plants
