Warli paintings are the tribal wall paintings of the warli tribes of Maharashtra. Warlis are the largest tribes of Maharashtra live in northern outskirts of Mumbai. Women folks mainly do the paintings on the mud walls of the houses. Warli paintings generally depict the normal life like images of human beings and animals, along with scenes from daily life. They also depict hunting, dancing, sowing and harvesting scenes. White and black is the only colour used in creating these paintings. In recent years the medium of these painting has transferred to paper and cloth layered with cow dung paste which produces the characteristic natural and dull background with the motifs painted white.
Originating from the Northern Sahyadri Range of Maharashtra in the Indian subcontinent, Warli painting encompasses exquisite works of folk style art practiced by the native tribes of these Sahyadri Ranges. The ranges comprise cities like Talasari, Jawhar, Palghar, Mokhada, Vikramgad, and Dahanu of the Palghar district. Researches suggest that the creations of these artistic paintings date back to a time as early as the 10th century AD (“History of warli art”)
These paintings typically illustrate activities and the life of the native tribes, pivoting elements of nature as the prime focus of depiction.
