Presenting to you right from the lanes of Bihar and talented craftsmanship,Tikuli art is a distinctive craft that can be seen in the form of indigenous art and manifestations finding its origin dating back to more than 800 years.
As the term tikuli suggests, it is a word used locally for bindis. With the expansion of industrialization, traditional goods succumbed to the blows of cheap machine-made goods. Tikuli was lost in the maze as machine-made bindis came into the market. In 1954, Chitracharya Padmashree Upendra undertook the forthcoming famous resurrection of the tikuli art by deciding to incorporate it in a way where artists were commercially selling traditional motifs on colorful hardboards. The fundamental raw materials used in Tikuli craft is a MDF board and visually appealing array of colors.Handcrafted by extremely talented artsmen , this creation in general provides for livelihood support to about 300-500 artisans families on regular basis in Danapur , Digha and Gai Ghat mahallas of Patna town in Bihar. The painting is done on these glazed surfaces of headboard plates depicting epics of Indian cultures and mythology like Mahabharat and ramayan. Fine brushes and paints are used to make these paintings with some being waterproof and are hence used in wall decor .Encompassing intricate caricatures and refined artwork , true patrons of art have been the catalyst for guiding the flourishing sales of this divine fabrication. The beauty of this art lies in its rarity and specialty as the beholders remain in awe of this engaging timeless creation.
